Watching Getafe Vs Sevilla this weekend I couldn’t help but be mightily impressed with Getafe’s Djene Dakonam, the Togolese centre-back who’d impressed me last year in his debut season in La Liga, having joined Getafe from Sint-Truidense of Belgium.

Against Sevilla, “Djene” was moved into midfield, in essentially a tactical role to shut down Banega and Mesa. In the first half especially, both seemed unsettled by the attentions of Djene. Not long after Getafe had gone 1-0 up Djene read a pass into Banega, closed him down aggressively and led the usually composed Argentine to present the ball straight back to Getafe from which Jorge Molina should’ve scored. A few minutes later, with Djene hurtling towards him again, Banega presented a five yard pass straight back to Getafe, from which Angel wastefully shot tamely from 35 yards out with better optinos available. It was extraordinary to see Banega hassled into so many mistakes. It was a performance of intense athleticism from the Togolese, with his ability to perform his midfield role a testament to his maturity and intelligence.

Indeed, it’s hard not to get carried away with praise for Djene, he’s an ideal blend of power and brains, extremely quick and strong with a highly combative streak. His ability to read the game allows him to utilise his physique to put that mental understanding into practice. Last season he played 36 times, helping unfancied Getafe to a respectable eighth in La Liga, conceding just 33 goals in the entire season, only Athletico and Barce had conceded fewer. They’ve started this season well again, lying 5th and have only conceded two goals so far, the best in La Liga, keeping 3 clean sheets out of 4.

Can we expect him to move in the future ? Yes, I think is the answer.

When Getafe President Ángel Torres renewed Djene’s contract last November, just three months after signing him, he was assured the club would sanction a move for a good enough offer, it is thought the club want his 35m euro release clause to be met. This summer Djene was linked with Villareal and heavily linked with Sevilla, although the move broke down as Sevilla only offered a paltry 15m Euros, with Getafe demanding 25m plus 10m in clauses.

Djené knows he’s highly regarded in the Premier League, where his physical style would surely suit, and several clubs are known to be following him. Leicester reportedly submitted a bid of 25m euros, although the move did not materialise. AS reported that Emery had made Djene a key target, although the price tag likely deterred cash-strapped Arsenal.

Regardless, the Togolese is thought to favour continuing his development in LaLiga. Djene, asked about his future back in February:

“I’m happy to be at Getafe in my first year in LaLiga. It’s a club without pressure when you lose and it’s good for my first season. I’m working to play for a bigger club…I’m focused on the second half of the season, which will be difficult for us, and in helping Getafe to reach all their objectives.”

Now, take a look at the man himself.

“Sergio Gomez is undoubtedly one of the best players of his age in the world. We’ve been interested in him for some time and are happy that he has decided to join Borussia Dortmund despite offers from many top European clubs.”

Dortmund’s Sporting Director Michael Zorc

In January 2018, Dortmund completed the signing of Sergio Gomez, the 17 year old regarded as one of the brightest talents in Spanish football for just €3 million euros, with Barcelona powerless due to the release clause in his contract. The sheer fact that he took this opportunity just shows the intelligence he possesses. He could have stayed within the comfortable environment of Barcelona, the club where he was at for 8 years but where the production line of talent into the 1st team has become blocked in recent years by a procession of result orientated coaches and big money signings. Or, he could have followed the money and been tempted by the vast riches of the Premier League but rejected moves to both Arsenal and Chelsea in 2017. The move to Borussia Dortmund was a calculated decision. A breeding ground for young talent and that demands an attractive, energetic and vibrant style of play. Players such as Robert Lewandowski, Mats Hummels and Marco Reus had all joined as relative unknowns and developed into world stars. The agreement was that Sergio would join the clubs under 19 and move to the first team squad in July 2019. However, he went on to make his first team debut on 8th April 2018 in the 3-0 victory over Stuttgart.

Sergio also has huge pedigree at youth international level. He scored 4 goals in 7 games at the Under 17 World Cup including two in the 5-2 loss to England in the final. He was also won the Silver ball behind Phil Foden who won gold (£3.37) of England.

His prospects for the 2018/19 season looking very encouraging. He has been called up for the clubs pre season tour of the US and crucially has been given the number 17 shirt. The sales of Andre Schürrle and Andriy Yarmolenko have created a clear pathway into Lucian Favre’s first team set up and are an obvious show of faith that they have in him. He can play anywhere across the front line although I see the number 10 role becoming his strongest position as he develops. This flexibility will be vital in getting the necessary game time which is vital between the ages of 17-21.

Other young attacking players at Dortmund; Jadon Sancho (£3.16) and Christian Pulisic (£3.18) show there’s massive potential for growth with Gomez currently only priced at (£1.40) I believe he has the quality and potential to reach the same levels as Isco (£4.65). This is a price he could potential achieve, not taking into account the inflation in player prices over the next three years due to the huge growth Football Index could achieve.

Playing for Dortmund is a big tick. Dortmund have achieved European qualification in each of the last 9 seasons making it almost certain he will be provided with the extra opportunities to win performance buzz throughout each of the next three seasons.

Sergio has recently been quoted as saying he would be open to a return to the Nou Camp in the future. If as expected he becomes a star at the Westfalenstadion, these will almost certainly begin to surface and provide some strong Media Buzz potential.
